Work To Film

WTF

What we do, why we do it, and the things we do not.

100 hours of build = 1 free shoot day.

That's it. That's the deal.

What It Is

Independent filmmaking is built on community, collaboration, and creativity — but access to professional studio space can be one of the biggest barriers to getting projects made.

Work to Film was created to change that.

By contributing your skills and time to Digital Canaries, you're helping build a stronger, more sustainable film community while earning meaningful access to professional production facilities for your own projects.

It's straightforward. It's transparent. It's designed to help more stories get made.

The Math Is The Deal

Big ideas deserve great spaces. Our Work to Film (WTF!) program lets filmmakers, creators, and production teams earn studio time by contributing to the work that keeps Digital Canaries running.

Whether you're helping build a set, painting, prepping for productions, striking a stage, or lending a hand around the studio — every approved hour you work becomes credit toward future use of our studio.

How It Works

Three steps. No mystery.

01

Tell us what you can offer

Carpentry, painting, prep, strike, art department, general studio help — whatever your craft is.

02

Work approved hours

Each hour logged, transparent, banked in your account. You always know where you stand.

03

Redeem for studio time

100 build hours = 1 free shoot day, ready when you are. No expiry games.

How the calculator works

Every 100 approved hours = 1 free shoot day. Want 2? Bank 200. Want a half-day? That's 50. Hours never expire, and they're yours — non-transferable, no cash-out, but yours until you use them.

Cancellations, banking past 100, and half-day rules are covered in your welcome pack. Reach out if you want the fine print before signing up — we're not hiding anything.

Ready to trade your hours?

Whether you've got a weekend to lend or a full build's worth of skill, we've got a stage waiting.

Common Questions

Good To Know

How much does an hour of work earn me?
$40 of credit toward studio time, per hour worked. Skilled trades — carpentry, electrical, scenic paint — earn 1.5×, or $60/hour.
How many hours for a free shoot day?
A studio shoot day is $4,000, so 100 hours at the standard rate covers one full day. Skilled-trade hours get you there faster, around 67 hours.
Does my credit expire?
No. Hours are banked and yours until you use them — no expiry games, no cash-out, non-transferable.
Do I need experience or my own tools?
No experience required for most shifts — we'll train you. We provide all tools, PPE, and supplies on-site. Bring closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind painting in.
How far in advance do I need to book my shoot day?
Three weeks minimum. The studio calendar fills up fast, so the earlier you lock in a date, the better.
What happens if I can't make a shift?
Life happens — just give your supervisor a heads-up. Repeated no-shows without notice can affect your standing in the program.
Is this a paid job?
No — WTF! is a non-monetary work-trade program. You're earning studio time, not wages. No T4, no payroll.
Do I need to be based near Hamilton?
You'll need to show up in person for shifts at the studio, so practically, yes — Hamilton/GTHA, or close enough to commute.
